Understanding Rotator Cuff Injuries

At its base, the shoulder joint connects the collar bone with the upper arm bone, the humerus. A third bone, the shoulder blade, covers this joint to protect it. The intersection of these bones is bound by muscles and tendons called the rotary cuff.

The rotary cuff holds the joint tightly in place, preventing the humerus from being out of socket. Injuries to the tendons and ligaments surrounding the shoulder can have a result in severe pain and restrictions in range of motion. These include muscle weakness, muscle spasms, tingling, pain, numbness, limited mobility, and difficulty sleeping due to pain.

    Types of Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rotator cuff injuries generally fall into the following four categories:

    Shoulder Strains

Shoulder sprains and strains and common injury one may sustain in a motor vehicle collision. For many individuals suffering from a minor shoulder strain, many injuries can heal within a few months with proper treatment.

    Bursitis

In between the bones in the shoulder are fluid-filled sacs, bursae. These sacs act as a cushion between the bones and muscles to prevent wear and tear. When the shoulder is injured, the bursae could become inflamed and cause a condition called bursitis which can be painful but treatable.

    Tendinitis

Tendinitis is a form of inflammation or irritation that targets the tendons in the arm and shoulder that usually relate to overuse but can stem from injury sustained in a car crash.

    Rotator Cuff Tears

The most severe rotator cuff injuries are tears. When one sustains a rotator cuff tear, it can be painful and debilitating with a loss of use. Such rotator cuff tears may not heal on their own and may require medical treatment. A tear can be partial, or full. Insurance companies may try to argue rotator cuff tear injuries are pre-existing, but our personal injury attorneys have seen such rotator cuff tear injuries result acutely as a result of trauma from a motor vehicle collision.
